What is Hing/Asafoetida?

It is a resin like gum which is extracted from dried sap of the stem and roots of the Ferula plant which is then crushed in between two heavy stones in the traditional way. Hing has been used since the ancient times in Indian cuisine (in dals, vegetables, khitchari, and also when making filled parathas) and is recommended by Ayurveda. For example, if you are making daal for two people just a single pinch of Hing powder is good but if you are making daal for four people then about 2 pinches of Hing powder can be used.

What are the health benefits of Asafoetida/Hing?

  • It is a remedy for stomach pain, flatulence, gas, constipation, indigestion and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This herbal powder can be used in daily food or can be included in buttermilk and consumed.

  • Asafoetida helps with bloating during menstrual cramps.

  • It can be used to relieve symptoms of Asthma, whooping cough, dry cough, and Bronchitis.

  • Hing controls cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

  • It can increase libido in men and treat impotency.

  • Hing contains anti-oxidants and pain relieving compounds that alleviate pain in Migraines, toothaches, and headaches.

  • It has anti-inflammatory properties for skin problems like corns and calluses.

  • Asafoetida has anti-carcinogenic properties that can help to protect against Cancer.

Note: Please avoid using Hing while pregnant as this has known to have differing impact with pregnant women. It should not be given to infants and not taken prior to surgery (at least 2 weeks) as it can slow down blood clotting.
